Today Hucclecote Panthers played their first games in the South West Regional League. The fact that Hucclecote are fielding 2 x U16 teams in Division 1 of this league shows the strength and depth at the club and bodes well for the future. In addition, two thirds of the Panthers squad are U15 players so to be appearing at this level is a credit to the girls. Our first game was against WestExe and a shaky start saw us go down 0-3 in the first few minutes. Once we had settled the lead was gained and maintained throughout the match. Consistent shooting from Violet, Rose and Nadine was instrumental in keeping the scoreboard ticking along. Each quarter saw us pull away a little further despite our best efforts to let them back into the game with a host of basic errors, mostly footwork and obstruction. Tash and Nadine worked well at the centre pass and remembered some of the moves from training. Back line passes still need a bit of work. Scarlett, Freya and Jenny worked tirelessly in midcourt bringing the ball through to attack. The final score was 46-33 but I hope the girls would agree that really we could have made life a little easier (work in progress!!). Player of the match was Grace who tipped and intercepted an incredible number of balls.
The next match against our A team was always going to be a big ask and we certainly rattled their cage in the first few minutes going into a lead. They settled more quickly than us and their superior skills, versatility and consistency proved to be the ultimate difference between 2 really good sides. The final score was 30-56.
Panthers players should use this game as a learning experience and analyse their own performance against that of the opposing player in the A team. In other words, which aspects of my game do I need to work on if I want to replace them in the A team? We are, after all, a team of cuckoos!!
Player of this match was Rose, who maintained a calm, composed approach throughout and who shot well despite some physical defensive battering. A special mention to Connie, as captain, who helped me immensely today and I thank her very much. What a lovely group of girls. It was a pleasure to coach you today, see you all on Tuesday, there’s lots to work on! 😀
