Hucclecote Dragons On Fire

Dragons took to the court on fire today after a 7 week break which in part was due to the snowfall before Christmas which saw several games cancelled.  They met TTNC in their first encounter of the day and dominated from the outset.  Amy Cook at Centre showed great speed and dynamic movement through court, and with Captain Harriet Sanderson leading her pack well hunting ball down and transitioning well, TTNC were left trailing 16-1 at the first break.  Meg Knight at WA found the shooters with ease, and with Hannah Howl at the back turning ball and rebounding strongly, the Dragons extended their lead to 34-5.  Consistent shooting by Alex Baird at 86% saw them maintain this performance taking the win by 64-17 with player of the match awarded jointly to Amy Cook and Harriet Sanderson.

Dragons knew the Bath match would be a tough encounter and the first quarter certainly saw Bath start strongly although Dragons edged ahead narrowly 14-11. Darcy at Centre with Olivia at WA connected brilliantly through attack and with great decision making , nailed the feeds to their shooters.  Baird really stepped it up taking on the challenge and at half time Dragons extended their lead to 27-21.

Changes saw Hucclecotes Captain Harriet Sanderson pushed back to GK, with Ellie Gabriel and Amy Cook on at GD and WD respectively.  This back unit worked tightly together and during the third quarter between them intercepted 6 clean intercepts which Dragons converted with ease. Dragons defence were a delight to watch, and this combined with Katya Jennings  Vice Captain nailing 13 shots from 13 attempts in the third quarter saw them go on their best run of goals in this phase.  Baird continued with her dominant form, and Bath could do little to stop them with the score extending to a huge 45 - 28 at 3/4 time.  Final changes saw Meg Knight on at WA for the final 15 placing some great feeds and with one final switch with Hannah Howl stepping back on to GD mid way through, Dragons roared. Player of the match was awarded to Alex Baird for her dominance and interaction throughout the attack although Harriet Sanderson could also played a blinder.

Their display on court was outstanding and Gilly Salter Coach said "this was a superb effort and I am proud of each of my squad members.  Baird was a real play maker today, and with Jennings nailing 93% in this game, this attack have finally come of age.  Defensively we have the best and strongest defenders and to see if all come together was a real pleasure.".  This leaves Hucclecote Dragons at the top of the league even though they still have 2 games in hand .

Thanks to Janey Garrard, Jo Knight, and Su Porter and to the fabulous supporters, parents and carers who voices of support and commitment are really appreciated.
