Round 5 of National Prem 1 and we hosted Cumberland in what would be a closely fought match from beginning to end. It was crucial that HNC got a good first quarter under their belts as two poor starts recently had seen them go down in the early stages of our most recent defeats. We did get off to a good start with both teams going goal for goal off their own CP. Even though turnovers were made we were unable to take them to goal due to some unforced errors and physicality shown by Cumberland. Cumberland managed to edge ahead with a strong finish and 5 goal run to take them up 11 - 15. The start of the Q2 saw new addition Nia Jones take to GD with Ella P-D moving back to GK. A dominant Cumberland GS was proving difficult to close down. With Nia working alongside fellow Welsh defender Clare Jones at WD we soon picked up ball in their attacking third. We won the Q by 2 goals bringing the score to 23 - 25. Lifted by a better 2nd Q Cote came out strong at the start of Q3 with a 4 goal run putting us ahead for the first time. Critical moments were now being recognised and HNC had momentum. Cumberland kept getting themselves back in the game with some easy pick ups and once again edged ahead by 2. Last Q changes saw Shona O`Dwyer on at WA alongside Shaunagh Craig at GA who moved the ball quickly to open up the defence. Cote once again responded with another 5 goal run and were able to maintain composure and play smart netball to keep possession. Frustrations began to show for Cumberland who began to challenge hard on and off the ball. The scoreline drew level one more time but some athletic defensive play from Ella P-D made the Cumberland GS feel the pressure with balls starting to go off the back. The experience of the HNC side really showed as we looked composed and in control to reward turnovers and keep possession under immense pressure. Final score 48 - 47 which puts us back in to 2nd place in the league.
