Sunday 2nd December brought a well deserved, well-needed win for Hucclecote Premier, beating Viper 10 Blades 49-38.
There was an exciting positive atmosphere amongst the squad from arriving at the venue in Bournemouth. With new coach Sam Brightman the team had benefited from structured training sessions with fresh ideas over the last couple of weeks and were ready to turn this new-found energy into a result.
Brightman's first challenge came 2 minutes into the game when Gray received an elbow to the face nearly knocking out her front tooth. Drastic changes had to be made down the court with starting Centre Gabriel moving to GK and GK Sam Cook stepping into the shooting circle at GA for the first time this season. Blades came out hard and also shot well, putting Hucclecote under pressure from the start, leaving them 12-11 up after the first quarter.
With clear focuses throughout the court, fantastic shooting from Sam Cook and excellent defensive pressure throughout the court, Hucclecote managed to finish the first half 1 goal up. It was then the third quarter where the magic happened. Gemma Gray returned from the bench to GS and Lauren Brookes came on to C, both making a fantastic impact to the court. Everything that had been focused on in training came together with much fewer unforced errors, responsibility for converting turnover and drives to the circle edge (most of the time!). Hucclecote led after the third quarter 39-27.
Blades made a couple of changes in the last quarter that injected a new pace into their game but Hucclecote stayed determined to take the victory 49-38. Joint man of the match went to Laura Smith and Sam Cook.
