After the great finish to 2012, it was a disappointing start to 2013, with a 15 goal loss to Oaksway at Cheltenham College today.

With a number of players missing & others playing carrying injuries, it was always going to be an uphill battle. Games with Oaksway are always extremely close & initially it looked like it was going to follow a similar pattern.

Hucclecote started quite well with shooters Sam Cook & Gemma Gray netting 8/11 attempts. At the other end, Amy Godwin at GK carrying a foot injury, & Captain Jack Gabriel also not 100% after illness, made 6 turnovers, keeping them in contention.

It was a number of foot work & off side errors mid court that denied Hucclecote as much possession, allowing Oaksway to edge into a 6 goal lead after the first 15 minutes.

The 2nd quarter saw the error rate much improved & with Cook converting 6/6 & Gray 4/6, Hucclecote closed the gap to 4 at one stage.

However with Oaksway's GS in sparkling form (10/13) they took the quarter 10 goals to 12, with the score 18-26 at half time.

Unfortunately Godwins foot injury forced her to leave the court at this point which gave the opportunity to Kayleigh Garbutt Roberts who had stepped up from the Regional 1 squad to put on the GD bib with Gabriel moving back to GK. This new partnership immediately looked comfortable with again a number of tips, rebounds & intercepts being made, but again with Oaksways shooter netting 100%, they edged slightly further ahead.

Mid court, Kerry Walsh, Lauren Brooks & Laura Smith worked hard, but whatever combination was played, Oaksways tight man to man marking put them under pressure & again errors were forced losing Hucclecote possession.

Hannah Jeavons coming on at GS for the last quarter did well, creating space & netting 4/6, with Cook 4/6. A change in the oppositions shooting circle, giving them a height advantage, paid dividends for them as she alone had 14 attempts at goal, converting 10.

The final result of 36-51 was a reflection of the amount of possession each team had, as shooting stats overall were similar. ( Hucclecote 75% & Oaksway 80%) Compared to attempts, 48 to Oaksways 63.

Overall it was a disappointing performance, particularly as the squad know they can perform so much better.

Squad; Gemma Gray, Sam Cook, Hannah Jeavons, Laura Smith, Lauren Brooks, Kerry Walsh, Jack Gabriel, Amy Godwin & Kayleigh Garbutt Roberts.
