Hucclecote 23 v Team Jets 40
Hucclecote travelled to Jersey for the first of their encounters this season and were warmly greeted on the Island.
Jersey committee were keen to promote this game being their first home game at regional division one level. With Jersey TV and Jersey Live radio present the promotion had encouraged a full house of spectators .
The first quarter was a closely contested one with Jersey hitting hard and taking the lead 4 -1 in the first five minutes. At times hucclecote demonstrated some excellent through court play, with Captain Michelle Dowle netting 75% of her shots. The back end Claire Richards was in dominant force with Helen Werrell at WD forcing errors. Jersey edged ahead 10 - 8 by the end of the first 15.
The second quarter saw hucclecote`s error rate increase as Jersey`s defense really piled on the pressure. Hucclecote found it difficult to penetrate through to the final third and shooting circle. Meanwhile Jersey produced the slicker display putting Hucclecote under immense pressure enabling them to increase their lead to 22 -12.
Hucclecote`s changes in the third quarter took time to settle and shooting opportunities were further limited by the domineering Jersey defence. The two umpires from Jersey were umpiring at Regional 1 level for the first time and on occasions struggled to keep up with the fast pace of the game.
Going into the final period Jersey lead 34 -16. More changes to hucclecote saw them at their best. Strong attacking play from Millie Price and Caroline Bedford at WA and C respectively enabled Hucclecote to take the ball to goal. With the first few minutes hucclecote scored four quick goals on succession with no response from the home team. Hucclecote were pleased with their final phase of play, taking the quarter by one goal but lost 40 - 23 overall.
Jersey certainly look favorites for the title having won three out of three but Hucclecote can take some credit in their performance with as the other two teams Raychem and Team Bath A both conceded 30+ goals compared to Hucclecotes 17.
For a squad that consists of some of hucclecote`s newest, youngest talent mixed with the experience of core squad members the return fixture could prove interesting.
