A new look line-up took the court against League Leaders Park Ladies today due to half-term commitments which saw 5 of Storms regular players missing. Storm utlised the mother and daughter combination of Eve and Tash Johnson in mid-court and both linked well through court. The shooting circle saw the return of Gilly Salter after a 2 year break, playing with Iona Wong at GA and this combination gelled well from the outset with Wong netting some fabulous shots and Salter creating some great space for Wong to drive into. This led them to a lead of 14-11 at the end of the first break.
In defence Lucy Werrell was outstanding, turning ball after ball, and with Captain Sharon Lowery also in fine form and stealing some great interceptions, and Kirsty Hughes marking tight at the back, helped to keep Hucclecote 1 goal ahead at half time.
The 3rd period was evenly matched and Hucclecote's maturity on court played a part in keeping things calm, and with little between the teams they still had the lead 31-30 going into the final 15.
A nail biting finish saw Park take the lead for the first time in the game, and at one stage looked as if they were drawing away. This combined with Hucclecote making a few errors in this 15 minutes and missing a few key shots for the first time in the game let the home team rally. However determination at the defensive end saw Lucy Werrel intercept some crucial balls and rebounds, and during the last 5 minutes Hucclecote came back hard but ran out of time losing to the League Leaders by just 36 goals to 35.
This was a fabulous effort by all considering this line-up was un-tested and some players drawn in at the last minute to ensure Hucclecote could fulfil their commitment with a bare 7 players on the day.
