Storm clinched a vital win over the current second-placed team in Division 3 to maintain their hopes of promotion. In difficult, windy conditions Survivors had the better of the early exchanges and went in 10-4 up at the end of the first quarter. A more determined second quarter saw Storm narrow the gap by three (17-14), with Toni Lowery and captain Sharon Greening keeping things tight at the back and Iona Wong netting some excellent goals in the conditions.
A close third quarter saw Storm draw level at one stage, with the mid-court trio of Kirsty Hughes and Lucy and Helen Werrell starting to dominate the opposition, forcing them into taking the ball back to their own goal third on many occasions. Only a late flurry of goals towards the end of the period and some frustrating umpiring calls on Storm's shooters saw Survivors retain their three goal lead (24-21).
It looked as if Storm's fate was sealed with two early goals without reply in the fourth, but with confidence and determination the team slowly began to reduce the deficit. With two minutes remaining Storm drew level and then for the first time in the game took the lead seeing out the game for an excellent victory by the single goal. The combination of Kirsty, Lucy and Helen worked tirelessly in creating opportunities for the shooters to take the game to the opposition. A similar work-rate in defence from Sharon and Beth Perry limited Survivors to just two more goals in the quarter and Lily Simmonds netted an impressive 7 out of 9 attempts in the trying conditions.
This was a tough, hard fought match, which the whole team deserve credit for not giving up on.
