Hucclecote Comets v Weston – Win 53-34
Hucclecote Comets won their first fixture of the season convincingly and put the first 5 points on the board.
This was a well-deserved win with some awesome netball being displayed throughout. The first quarter saw Kellie Hull in fine form and at GK she turned 3 interceptions, and dominated the Weston shooting circle. Jo Hutchings her partner in crime in the defensive circle also worked hard to support and maintain the tight 1:1 defending that they had been set to do. Meanwhile Jodie Webb at C also made a big impact and stole 3 interceptions as well as driving hard to feed the shooting circle.
Erin Howells was on fire, and nailed 8 shots from 8 attempts and for the first time this season played with outstanding confidence. Betsy Willie at GS connected well with Howells and Weston just didn't know what had hit them. The score of 14-7 was a positive start for the first quarter.
This continued much into the second quarter, where just one change was made with Nikki Carvey being brought on to make her debut at WA resting Captain Kate Nicholls. Howells once again nailed a further 8 attempts and Betsy Willie scored 6 from 7. With the ball swishing through the net, it was no surprise that Hucclecote had edged to a 28-15 goal lead at half time.
With Nicholls on to her favourite position at C, she demonstrated great control and with Becky Cambell back from her South African tour, being given court time at GK, Hucclecote continued to dominate with Cambelldemonstrating a real thirst to steal 4 balls from the oppositionin her first period on court.
Annabelle Stayley once again impressed, and although only15 years old contributed well staying tight one on one and denying the Weston WA space. One final switch saw Hull switch from GK to GS for the final period and this transition went without a single hitch. She too nailed her first 3 attempts securely and it was no surprise to see Hucclecote run out winners by 53 goals to 34.
This was a huge boost to the girls and one they really deserved. Overall Kellie Hull was nominated as Player of the Match by Coach Gilly Salter, whilst Erin Howells was awarded Player of the Match by the opposition.
