GCNA U.14 TournamentHucclecote Dragons set the pace and were on fire in their first real test of the season. With a squad of 11, and missing Katya Jennings due to injury, Coach Gilly Salter was able to give everyone plenty of court time. The first fixture v Chelts Toucans saw Eva Andrews and Pheobe Gerard net 11/12 and 5/5 respectively, and with the back end stealing ball and Captain Harriet Sanderson in awesome form, they ran away to win 20 - 0. A similar story against Cirencester saw the Dragons back on top form and even though each game saw all 11 players take the court, it never disrupted their flow. Megan Knight and Lucy Griffin both performed strongly helping take another clear 5 points by winning 19-4. Randwick Ambers were one of the top favourites in this section alongside Dragons, however with Jenny Carson on fire scoring 90% throughout, and Olivia Garrard stepping her game plan up another level, the attack were just unstoppable. In addition, with the defensive trif of Sanderson , Connie Trendle and Alex Neilson hunting down ball, Dragons displayed some exceptional play to take victory 16-2. Their last fixture in the rounds against Stroud Falcons saw no let up and with Izzy Naish and Amy Cook dominating on the wings, Hucclecote roared into the semi-finals winning this game 22-0 only to find they were about to face Hucclecote Firebirds. Firebirds who had performed strongly all morning felt the pressure earlier on and with the smell of a final in the bag, Dragons pressed home to win 17-3. Facing Cirencester A in the final, Dragons could not afford to be complacent, and got off to a great start. With Griffin on 100%, Alex Neilson taking 3 clean intercepts and Harriet Sanderson matching this, Hucclecote Dragons began to edge into a comfortable half time lead. With changes made allowing all players to play in the final, Dragons finished off in style, slaying the opposition and winning 10 goals to 2 remaining undefeated in their first outing and securing a South West Regional League position for the forthcoming season.
This was an awesome first performance and test for a young but very talented squad and one that Coach Gilly Salter was very proud of. Thanks to Janey Garrard as Team Manager, and other parents for scoring, and to Ella
Powell Davis for supporting at Assistant Coach.
