Hucclecote U.14 Dragons Slayed in Double Header v PooleEmeralds and Ferns
Hucclecote U.14’s playing their first two double header fixtures at Regional League Division One for the first time, had two narrow losses against two well drilled teams from Poole.
The first match against Poole Emeralds saw a huge improvement by Dragons who had previously had a heavy defeat against them at the Regional Rounds to gain entry. With new combinations on show, when Hucclecote Dragons took care of the ball they looked equally as good. They lost the first quarter by 4 goals and with one switch at Centre, bringing on Amy Cook, Cote drew within 2 goals 13-11 at half time. This pace continued, and with Alex Baird making her first debut at GA this level, her shooting didn’t disappoint. The same had to be said for Katya Jennings at GS. The third period ended 19-17 down with centre passes going goal for goal. The final 10 minutes saw Poole edge ahead slightly and whilst it was a loss to the Dragons 26-22, they did enough to earn the extra point for losing within 5 goals. Amey Cook proved to be the man of the match and this was a much more inspiring performance.

With an hours break, Dragons regrouped, and took the court against Poole Ferns, a team they knew little about. The first half was proved close, although Hucclecote Dragons found it difficult to penetrate the ball through to their GS. Leaving it to settle and being 5-4 up at quarter time, Dragons continued to battle it out although Ferns began to pressure and at half time had reversed the lead to 11 goals to 10. With consistency throughout court and in the shooting circle lacking, Dragons switched to a mobile shooting circle and although Baird shot well when in receipt of the ball, attempts at goal were limited. Ferns GA had an outstanding game, and really stepped it up netting an average of 7 attempts per quarter and over two of these scored 100%. Dragons had little reply and although changes were made, it was definitely the better team who extended the lead to 20-14 at ¾ time. A final big effort by the Dragons saw them fight back hard, however with much to learn in maintaining possession, Ferns ran out the eventual winners by 8 goals 27-19 . Although disappointing to lose two games on their first double header weekend, this is a huge step up for this squad and things can only improve. Player of the match went to Alex Baird for her consistency and availability.
