Hucclecote Netball Club U.14 Dragons notch up their first two wins

Match V Team Jets

Hucclecote Dragons travelled to Plymouth for a double header fixtrure against Team Jets (Jersey) and West Exe (Devon) and put out a fantastic effort , particularly against the Devon sideto earn their first two victories of the season.

Team Jets, a young and neat team struggled to contain the height of the Hucclecote Shooter , and with the defence unit at the back taking huge numbers of interceptions, Hucclecote had built up a 14-8 lead at half time.  A few changes saw Jets hit back and Hucclecote whose error increased,  were lucky to maintain their 4 goal  lead at ¾ time. Taking no chances, Coach Gilly Salter reverted back to her starting 7, and with Alex Neilson on fire at WD taking some stunning intercepts, they stormed the final period taking their first victory at regional level by 24 goals to 16. Neilson was also named player of the game.

Match V West Exe

Their second fixture of the day was always going to be the tougher of the two.  West Exe matched Hucclecote in height throughout the court and proved to be really tough contenders.  Hucclecote were first off the blocks, however restricted distribution through to the shooters was evident, and although Katya Jennings nailed 5/5 shots, the attack struggled to bring the ball through and just couldn’t create enough opportunities. Changes were therefore made and whilst Hucclecote defence once more stood up to the challenge with Captain Harriet Sanderson taking charge and the unit supporting playing out of their skins, West Exe’s partnership in the defending circle really put the young dragons under pressure reducing conversion rates to just 5/10.  Although 3 up at half time, West Exe seemed more urgent, and in what became a physical battle on court, goals went with centre pass, and at ¾ time the gap had closed to 13-12 in Hucclecote’s favour.  The final decision to switch Eva Andrews to GA and put Alex Baird back to GS was the move that made the impact.  Andrews used great game sense , selecting great space and shot consistently well scoring 4/5 (80%) in the final phase.  Combined with a fantastic defensive effort , and with Sanderson and Neilson stealing ball, Hucclecote secured an amazing win by just 2 goals. Andrews earned player of the match for her outstanding calmness and accuracy during this quarter.

With the aim of a top 4 place in view, Hucclecote’sdetermination and effort could not be faulted and they look forward to meeting Saints from Cornwall next weekend.
