Stars v’s Carol Anne
Hucclecote Stars shine as they beat Carol Anne
Hucclecote Netball Club’s adult regional team namely Stars took on the mighty Carol Anne Netball Club from North Devon this weekend at Cheltenham College and they didn’t disappoint the audience of support !.
Stars were sitting second in the South West England Division 1 league as they entered this match and Carol Anne were holding third, snapping at the heals of the Gloucestershire girls ! so this was always going to be a tough game .
The usual first quarter nerves were always going to create errors on both sides as each player settled down to find out where the oppositions strengths and weaknesses were, but with a great teamwork spirit Stars soon settled down and after trading goals managed to eek a 4 goal lead by the end of the first quarter.
There was a distinct weakness in Carol Anne’s shooters which the defence trio of Claire Richards, Laura Stubbings and Sarah Adams capitalized on forcing error after error and making sure any rebound ball was theirs .
Mid court worked tirelessly ensuring that the Stars shooting circle was well fed and the hard work paid off with Hucclecote stretching their lead to 9 goals at half time.
The 3rd quarter gave coach Jenna Culley a chance to putting some fresh legs on court with Helen Werrellpicking up the centre bib and Michelle Dowle back from maternity leave happy to be fitting into the Goal Attacks bib. These changes picked the games pace up and Stars then started to force Carol Anne into more errors . Errors create frustration and the game became a little more physical but Hucclecote kept their heads and played some slick netball. One small injury to Helen Hynes ankle saw Emma McKenzie slip back onto court at Wing Attack which was a like for like replacement keeping the momentum in Stars favour.
Score line after this quarter was a respectable 37 / 24 to Hucclecote .
The last quarter was all about the shooting circle Laura Butler at Goal Shoot had had a great game and was rested up with Michelle Dowle taking her bib but this last 15 minutes was to be Jane Taylor’s master class on how to play Goal attack she was absolutely on fire, appearing everywhere on court defending, intercepting ball and scoring 12 out of 12 shots on goal giving her that 100% shooting stat for that quarter. This play earned her the nominated player of the match and still only at the tender age of 16 years old !. The match finished with a well deserved Hucclecote Stars 53 / 31 win .
