Hucclecote Stars v’s Raychem
“Superior Fitness Nets a Great Win”
Hucclecote Stars 65 / Raychem 30
Top of the League plays bottom of the league in what is the penultimate match before the big show down game next weekend !
Raychem the Swindon based netball club had not had the best of seasons this year with only one win to their name the relegation zone from the Regional 1 League was inevertable but never the less they had come to play and with some very tall and experienced players, namely the Lawrence sisters Nicky and Hayley who they were going to try and topple the league leaders .
Hucclecote’s team sheet numbered 9 and with the absence of reliable Laura Butler, Meg Randell had been drafted up to give the shooting circle a reserve.
Warmed up and ready to go the starting seven were Brooke Vivian GS, Jane Taylor GA, Helen Hynes WA (cpt), Emma Mckenzie C, Helen Werrell WD, Laura Stubbings GD, Claire Richards GK, subs were Elisha New and already mentioned leggy Meg Randell.
One of the umpires just got to the game in time and barely warmed up before the game was started.
A hard hitting first quarter was the brief for the Hucclecote girls, as they had been lacking this in recent matches . We needed to find any weaknesses in the opposition and fast so we could capitalize on them .Raychem were not going to let Hucclecote have things their way easily as goals were traded and with the tall Nicky Lawrence Raychem’s goal shoot very accurate on goal, a score line of 16/10 quarter finish, which was a good start for the Stars 6 goals up and ready for more !
No changes made going into the second quarter just advice to the defence circle to push the shooters out and make them shoot long or better still “don’t let the ball even enter the circle “.
All info taken on board and with Claire Richards GK using her “superior fitness” she was turning ball and sending it back down court at a phenomenal rate. In our shooting circle the working combination of the “Severn Stars” duo Jane Taylor and Brooke Vivian was a pleasure to watch with fantastic movement of both ball and player they capitalized on every ball in their third . Goal after goal this was going to be a killer blow quarter .
21 goals scored by Hucclecote to Raychem’s reply of only 7 so the score now stood at 37 / 17 at the half way point.
Coach Jenna Culley was pleased with the way the girls were playing but advised that we must not let their guard down or rely on what they had achieved ,more of the same and keep it clinical.
Two changes made for the 3rd Meg Randell slipped on the GS bib from Brooke Vivian who had an outstanding first half but was getting close to being team tied from Regional 2 with quarters played, and pocket rocket Elisha New was ready to fire up in the centre court giving Emma Mckenzie a well earnt rest.
These changes were of no detriment to the team, the mid court were still an awesome force with Helen Werrelltaking on Raychem’s youngest player Bethan Harris at WA, she was giving her a defencive lesson on Regional 1 play tipping and intersepting ball all over the place . We must not forget the steering wheel of this team in Helen Hynes fighting for ever ball and making sure the shooters are so well fed .
Meg Randell was soon settled in and has played alongside Taylor on many occasions, in no time she was netting balls and making good solid decisions to hold players off whilst Taylor shot too . Her in and out skills and splits kept us all entertained sometimes getting closer to the post but on occasion ending up further away !!!!! Great to watch all the same Meg .
Laura Stubbings at GD lived up to her name and badly stubbed a finger in her defence efforts but soldiered on until the quarter end when primary carer Andrew Taylor was able to treat the injury with the all familiar ice pack !
3rd Quarter result 50 / 24. Hucclecote had now surpassed over doubling the oppositions score .
Last Quarter saw Coach Culley move a few players around Elisha New moved to WD, Emma Mckenzierevitalized took the centre bib this gave Helen Werrell a chance to rest and shout advice from the bench .
Raychem made a strategic move too, playing the two tall Lawrence sisters in defence , this was to try and limit our “superior” shooting stats and try and get the losers bonus point .
Not to be ! Hucclecote Stars turned on the talent they have and were not phased by intimidation Randell and Taylor kept slotting the goals and the whole team stepped up to ensure an emphatic win of 65 /30 .
Raychem had fought to the end with all they had but it wasn’t enough on the day as they drop down to Regional 2 , there is a very close battle going on at the top of that league to see who gets automatic promotion between Whitchurch and Premior Romans another end of season show down .
Player of the match went to our “Ice Queen” shooting Star Brooke Vivian who had put the game out of reach just playing in the first half ,well done Brooke .
Hucclecote Stars focus now lies on the biggest game of the season next week against Aquarians down in Poole,Dorset . This game decides the winners of the SouthWest England Regional 1 League a massive game not to be missed !!!
