Hurricanes Div.1 campaign for the new season got off to a flying start with a comprehensive win over Tommies. This squad has undoubtedly been strengthened by a number of players who played at Regional level last year, but everyone contributed on Saturday with a great performance which certainly looks good for the season.
Pollyanna Banyard was in sparkling form, netting 16/22 shots. Michelle Dowle, back after missing most of last year with injury, also played strongly in the circle, once she got back into her stride!
Considering this is the first match of the season, all mid court players gave solid performances, whatever combination was on court. Liz Ashmead had an outstanding game at GD, turning numerous ball & supporting well through court. Behind her at GD, Toni Lowery had a good game, demonstrating she is more than able to step up to the first team.A few little mistakes in the rusty start saw Tommies claw a few too many goals back. However, with the depth of players available, tired legs were soon replaced by fresh ones and after an unsettled 3rd quarter saw Hurricanes stretch their lead. A special mention goes to Hannah Evans for her first and possibly last game as we wave her goodluck on her travels to
Coach Sue Wainwright, “I am extremely encouraged by what I saw Saturday & see no reason why this squad cannot get better & better!”
