With a Tiger in Hucclecote’s Defence Carol Anne were Hunted  Down !

Hucclecote Stars 64  /  Carol Anne  39

Second round of the South West England Regional 1 League and another trip down the M5 and out to Barnstaple to play Carole Anne Netball.

Carol Anne have always been a tough encounter especially an away fixture.

This game last season was played at Bideford College and a real test for Stars winning 49/41 a win slowly gained through all the quarters .

With 2 players unavailable to play from last weeks team ( Meryl and Beck) two new players stepped up to the plate , Lydia Jones a defensive expert and the young talented up and coming star Katie Cruickshank these  two very versatile players weregoing to be an asset to an already proven squad.

The game scheduled was for an 11 am centre pass at West Buckland School so an early for everybody involved . The school sorts department was called the Jonathon Edwards Sports Centre named after the famous triple jump Olympic / World champion , so a feel of being somewhere special was all apparent .

With only 8 players on the bench (+Jac) the brief was to play hard but conserve energy where you can and no injury’s !!

A good warm up and just watching from the bench you could see Hucclecote were up for it , really stretching out for ball and a good spring in their step.

Starting 7 were GS=Beth Gabriel, GA=Jane Taylor, WA=Helen Hynes (captain), C=Felicity Elvidge, WD=Issabella Robinson, GD=Lydia Jones, GK=Katie Cruickshank, reserves Brooke Vivian and Jackie Gabriel.

Carol Anne had strength and depth throughout the court with a solid GS and two very tall good defenders but Stars just took them in their stride.

Lydia had confessed to me before the game got under way that this being her first game in a while she had butterflies in her stomach, well something was taking her up to the highest of heights in defence turning ball and stamping her authority in the “D” . She may have had butterflies but came out like a tiger devouring everything in her path !

Each ball stolen was converted by Jane and Beth as they worked out how to split and divide Carol Anne’s defence. Although they were tall these two are just so quick and a joy to watch as they know one anothers every move !!

First quarter over and a healthy 10 goal advantage to Stars  17/7.

Only one change made going into the second quarterHelen sat out and Brooke Vivian took the WA bib. It was obvious from the start that the dynamics of the attack changed dramatically taking Helen off and umpires were very hard on Brooke at the centre pass thus giving Carol Anne the advantage on

many occasions , that much so that a ten goal advantage was eaten up and at times in the quarter Stars were trailing by 2 goals. The whole team dug deep and managed to turn enough ball to go 2 goals up

by half time  26/24.

Back to the original starting 7 for the 3rd with Felicity (Flick) controlling the centre circle ,both Izzy and Helen made sure every available ball moved seamlessly down court to Beth and Jane who were so reliable in their goal finishing.

Jane had been her usual acrobatic self managing to score off the back line when everybody thought it was a lost cause and the ball was going out of play !!

This was to be a killer quarter increasing the lead from 2 goals to 13 by quarter end 47/34.

Now with just 15 minutes to play the girls saved the best till last and now really had the bit between their teeth, with Jane and Beth unable to miss the goal ring it was a question of getting the turn overs and intersepts.

Izzy Robinson at WD moved up a gear and was everywhere on court making herself a real nuisanceandturning ball (legally) !she worked so well with Katie Cruickshank such a reliable set of hands whohad stepped up to Regional 1 level like she had always been there ,( a quite work horse doing the business ).

Goal after goal the score board clicked and Hucclecote started to chase that goal difference that could be so important later in the season .

Just before the final quarter end Helen took a fairly hard tumble bruising her left knee so with an

injury time out Brooke took back to the court in the WA bib and stepped up to keep the goals coming.

Final score 64/39 a great win in Carol Anne’s back yard .
