Hucclecote Dragon’s on Fire

Hucclecote squads attended their first South West Regional fixtures in Paignton on Sunday where Dragon’s took on Team Bath in their first match and their very own Hucclecote Panthers in Division One.  Supported by a great group of volunteering parents, and two very talented umpires, Anna Stevens and Evie Stewart-Davis, the day proved to be a huge success.

Although Dragons looked strong in the opening minutes against Bath, with Captain Harriet Sanderson and the unit of Meg Knight and Hannah Howl turning 7 interceptions in this quarter alone, the attack took a little while to settle. However, they soon found their rhythm and led 10-4 at quarter time.  Katya Jennings was on fire scoring 8/8 and 8/10, 8/9 and 9/10 and combined with some great through court play from Darcy Scott and Olivia Garrard Hucclecote ran out comfortable winners 47-30.  Player of the match was awarded to Katya Jennings for her dominance and conversion of 89% scoring an amazing 33/37.

Their second fixture saw Dragons play their Hucclecote Panthers Squad and in the first few minutes it was Panthers who played the better netball leaving Dragons trailing for the first 5 minutes.  Dragons slowly clawed the deficit back and by half time, with Jennings once again on target scoring a very high 96%, enabled her team to storm into a strong lead at half time of 31-13.  With Amy Cook at Centre and Ellie Gabriel to WD, these two brought stability through the mid court along with both taking interceptions increasing possession opportunities.  This allowed Alex Baird newly moved to Goal Shooter to shine, as she put up and scored 13/13 with a 100% conversion in this phase alone,  with Darcy Scott feeding in some precision feeds.  There was no going back for Hucclecote and with Hannah Howl on top form dominating in defence showing great range and athleticism, she gained the Player of the Match and helped her team rally home to take their second win of the season 56 goals to 30.
