Lightening certainly lived up to their name in the first league game of the season beating a young Gloucester Ladies side 45-27.

The first quarter was evenly matched with Hucclecote only one goal ahead after the first 15 minutes.  Outstanding shooting by Wendy Burgess netting 7/8 shots and Jo Hutchins at Goal Defence who demonstrated great defensive skills taking many interceptions and rebounds were the key influences on court.

The second quarter saw tactical input which helped Hucclecote to dominate and take more control of their game.  In comparison, the shooting duo of Stella Ben Hania and Burgress had 19 attempts rather than 13 from the first quarter, and with Helen Werrell showing great speed and agility through mid-court linking well with Kat Honeywill, Hucclecote certainly found their pace and extended their lead to 21-15 at half time.

The third quarter brought changes with Burgess moving to shooter and youngster Lily Simmonds on at GA.  Lucy Werrell also replaced an injured Jo Hutchins at GD.  The changes brought about more movement in the shooting circle opening up the Gloucester defenders and even though under intense pressure on the shot, Simmonds and Burgess conversions rates continued to be high taking the score to 33-21.

Lucy Smith a young 15 year old made her debut at WD on the day and worked tirelessly defending tight 1 on 1 and she was well supported with some great rebounding by another new player Emma Jane Curtis also making her debut at Goal Keeper.  The second half performance particularly paid dividends with Smith and Lucy Werrell taking tips and interceptions helping the team to add to their scoreline.

The final 15 minutes saw a determined Gloucester Ladies effort however the lead and motivation from the Hucclecote squad, comprising of a great mix of experience and youth was far too great a match for their opposition on the day.  The final result of 45 goals to 27 was a fantastic start for Lightening who show huge promise for the forthcoming season.
