The first fixture of 2019 saw Comets secure an emphatic win over Trident who they had only beaten by 4 goals just before Christmas. With both regular shooters unavailable, Comets saw the welcome return of Alex Baird back from injury & young U16 Georgie Thorp was invited to join the squad. Georgie, making her debut at Regional level, played with the confidence & composure that belied her young age. She was outstanding from the outset netting 12/14 in the first Q. Alex back after a long injury absence, contributed to the 65 goal tally & fed Georgie accurately. All the mid court combinations worked well & with the flexibility of players, Comets were able to bring fresh legs on each Q. Although the first Q was closely contested, by half time Comets really began to dominate taking the score to 30-17. It was during the 2nd Q particularly that the defence duo of Hannah & Elhana overpowered Tridents shooters restricting them to only 8 attempts at goal compared to Comets 18! The 2nd half continued much in the same way- both shooters converting with ease & turnover & interceptions throughout the court keeping them well supplied with ball. The final score of 65- 34 was a reflection of Comets dominance in all areas of the court. Although the players at both ends really stood out, it was the fast flow accuracy of the ball through court that left Trident powerless to stop the onslaught of attack. This result has elevated Comets to 5th place in the table, with a place in the top 3 a realistic target.
