A slightly depleted Comets squad faced top of the table & unbeaten Exeter ‘B’ on Saturday.
Nevertheless, Comets had been performing well in recent games & coach Sue Wainwright had every confidence in the 9 players she had available.
Comets took an early 4 goal lead with outstanding shooting conversions by Meg ( 11/11) & Alix (3/3)
Mid court Georgie, Darcey & Katie moved the ball through court with the brief to “look after it!”
The circle defence duo Hannah & Tee really unsettled Exeter’s normally very accurate Gs, taking a no of clean intercepts & rebounds.
Fresh legs mid court in Ella & Milly gave Comets added impetus & with Meg on fire netting 16/16, they stretched their lead to 9 at half time.
Changes again in mid court allowed Comets to pull away to an 11 goal lead, through changes in the Exeter defence did break Meg & Alex’s shooting rhythm a little.
Going into the final 15 mins, with a win definitely achievable, Comets were told to play calmly & just convert on their own C pass.
Exeter stepped up a gear & actually won the final Q by 2 goals, but it was too little too late!
Comets took a very well deserved victory 57-49, breaking Exeter’s unbeaten run this season.
This leaves Comets in 4th place in the table, but with one eye on moving up into 3rd place in the next couple of weeks.
