Comets travelled to Swindon with a lean squad of 8 due to a Stars NPL match & an unfortunate injury to Ehlana the week before.
Of the 8 players, 2 were carrying an injury so Comets were up against it!
They lost out narrowly by 2 goals 56-58 to Pinehurst breaking their unbeaten run of 7 matches.
Pinehurst started off the better taking a 7 goal lead due to an error strewn quarter- 12 in all!
Every error was capitalised on by the extremely accurate Pinehurst GS!
Although there was an improvement in the next Q, with turn overs by the mid court & less errors, Pinehurst stretched their lead out to 11 by half time.
Meg @ GS was repeatedly “taken out” by a very physical Gk with all the pressure on the attack to feed her the ball.
Hannah & Milly @ the back worked tirelessly to close down the GS but she continued to convert accurately.
A change in line up at half time had an immediate impact, Tee coming on at Gk and with the rest of the unit moving forward, Emily took on the shooting duties, aided by Ella, with Meg coming off.
At 3/4 time Comets had clawed back 3 goals, scoring 15 to Pinehursts 11, to start the final Q 7 down.
Now it was a frantic case of catch up! Bit by bit, Comets chipped away at the deficit, Emily finally coming into her own at GS netting 17/18!
The defence trio Tee, Hannah & Milly made 4 turnovers which gave Comets the impetus to keep going & close the gap.
It was certainly a game of 2 halves with Comets winning the 2nd by 8 goals, but it was too much to close down with the final score 56-58!
It was a disappointing result as if it had not been for such a poor start, Comets would have secured another win.
Squad: Meg, Emily, Ella, Georgie, Katie, Milly, Hannah & Tee.
Shooting stats:
Meg 4/4- 100%
Ella 5/6 - 83%
Emily 47/57 - 82%
