Hucclecote Netball Club through to Regionals

Hucclecote’s U.16 Dragons season got underway on Sunday when they entered the Gloucestershire County Cup with the target of winning it to enable them to go through to Regional Play Offs.  A new look squad took to the courts under the Captaincy of Hannah Howl and Vice Ellie Gabriel.

Their first fixture saw them dominate against Cirencester and although they stormed into an 25-3 goal lead at half time Cirencester never gave up and continued to work hard.  Hucclecote Dragons made changes during the second half putting out new combinations to ensure all players took to the court.  All changes worked well including the shooters who converted some great shots. High stats from Izzy Eaton and Sophia Winfield saw them achieve 87% and 86% respectively.  The final score line saw the Dragons roar home winning 52-4.

The second game of the tournament saw the two Hucclecote teams Dragons and Panthers play each other in a well contested game. Both teams demonstrated some good skill throughout and whilst Dragons were always the favourite’s Panthers showed promise with some young U.15’s taking the court.  The final score saw Dragons run out winners 47-11with Eaton and Pauling this time netting an incredible 93% and 79% respectively.

Dragons final game saw them a little unsettled earlier as through court playthat had looked slick and quick earlier on saw a few errors creeping in.  When they did take ball to goal

their shooting consistency with Izzy Eaton and Katie Pauling was at 100% during the first quarter.  Challengers shooting circle played well and Dragons defence unit of Hannah Howl,Ellie Gabriel and Scarlett Jinks had their work cut out. Dragons remained calm and built their lead each quarter before finally going on a dominant run in the last quarterdemonstrating some fast paced and exciting netball to extend and take the victory by 38-19. This was a superb effort by all which allowed shooters to be well fed and saw Eaton hit 96% (22/23) and Pauling achieve her highest conversion rate of the day at 80% (16/20)

This was a great first run out for this very talented squadalthough there is still work to do to ensure the units understand each other and produce a more clinical finish in the tougher games ahead.

Thanks to umpires Anna Stephens and Neil Gavin who supported on the day and to the Dragons volunteers Becky Howl ,Team Manager, Jack Gabriel, Primary Carer/Stats andHelen Pauling for Scoring.
