Hucclecote turned last years first encounter around against Trident today winning by 45 goals to 22.
In defence Anna Toms was oustanding with Nicole Goddard and both players kept the turnover rate high, and with Jess Denton determined to control ball, Trident had to work hard in the first quarter and were restricted to just 6 goals. In mid court, Captain Caroline Bedford at Centre worked tireslessly with some great passages of play linking in beautifully with Beth Thompson at WA . Whilst 'Cote' had ample opportunity in the first quarter they didnt always capitalise on it and scored just 9/ 19 attempts leading by just 9 - 6. James Thomas umpiring at this level for only the 2nd time this season controlled the game demonstrating great speed to keep up the pace of the game.
The second quarter remained the same and once again there were moments of outstanding netball with Polly Banyard playing an intelligent game on the GA linking with Rhianna Hallbrook well. They edged ahead to 17-10 by half time.
Changes saw Maxine Powell on at GS to allow Hallbrook time to ice an injury, and with the defence unit moving up one, allowing Goddard to WD and Toms to GD, youngster Toni Lowery took to the court for her first debut at this level. Powell demonstrated some fast agile movement and alongside this convert strongly 10/13 in her first quarter on leading 'Cote' to a 30-18 3/4 score.
The final 15 saw Hallbrook back on to GS with Powell at GA, and the first 5 minutes saw them off the blocks with some clinical finishing. In Mid court, Denton back on WD turned 4 clear intercepts but with tiredness showing in mid court the error count increased slightly with some wild passing sneaking in to their attacking play. However the last 5 minutes saw Hucclecote demonstrate some fast accurate play and with Hallbrook back on song scoring 9/13 in this quarter and Powell scoring 6/6 Hucclecote impressed to take the game 45 -22.
This was an excellent performance for only their 2nd game of the season demonstrating strength and depth witin the squad. Player of the match went to Anna Toms for her tenacious defending and turnover of the ball.
