Hucclecote Lightening 27 vs Gloucester Ladies 23
This week Lightening felt they had a lot to prove and were determined to let their netball do the talking; and that is exactly what we did. With several players unavailable, Ella Gardner and Wendy Burgess were called up to the squad. Hayley Mortimer also stepped in at short notice in both player and coaching capacity. As anticipated it was a very closely fought match but Lightening were able to keep the upper hand throughout. Fran Preedy worked hard in the centre and together with WA Lucy Smith they were able to feed the ball into shooters Lily Simmonda and Wendy Burgess. The shooters had a challenging time against a very strong defensive team. Lauren Brice came into the shooting circle and linked well with Lily Simmonds who showed she has grown in confidence in recent weeks.Ella Gardner, Lauren Brook and Eleri Sewell worked hard in defence and were able to break down a lot of the attacking plays, turning over ball frequently and giving the Lightening attack opportunity to pull away a lead. Hayley Mortimer came on in the centre at half time and her experience enabled Lightening to dictate the pace of the game. The final quarter saw some great netball from both teams with previous silly errors being eliminated, however Hucclecote kept their work rate up and was able to finally win the game 27-23.
Overall a very good win, and thanks go to Hayley, Ella and Wendy who stepped up and helped out Lightening for what was a very important match in the season,
