Hucclecote Secure 2nd Place in the Premiership

An amazing second half performance saw Hucclecote turn a result from 7 goals down at half time against Academy to a 7 goal victory, retaining their 2nd place in the Premiership and placing them in a position to contest for the Premiership Title.

Academy dominated in the first 15 and although Hucclecote gave 100% out on court, the basics kept breaking down leaving Hucclecote trailing 5-11 at the end of the first 15 minute period.  A changed line up saw Sam Cook on to GA and Neala Brennan to WA and this certainly made an impact and enabled Hucclecote to stay close to their opposition, with the score 12-11 in this period to Academy.

More re-arrangements to try and enable Hucclecote to turn more ball saw Capt Jackie Gabriel take ownership of the GD bib switching with Sammi Perry at WD. Even though Gabriel was not feeling 100% well, you would not have known,  and the defensive end stepped up a gear and took total control reducing scoring opportunities for a tough Academy side.  In attack, Brennan and Cook played some well controlled netball, and with Brennan's vision into Allison, Hucclecote gradually began to pull back the deficit creating 20 shooting opportunities in this quarter.  Sarah Adams at C found great space too, and this helped Hucclecote take the lead for the first time in the game.  The quarter end result demonstrated great patience and determination from a Hucclecote squad  who again showed great maturity and with the score line at 29-28 in Hucclecote’s favour, lifted confidence and self belief winning this quarter by 8 goals.

With Academy now looking uncomfortable in their play, their re-arranged side were unable to penetrate and they began to make unforced errors which Hucclecote took advantage of.  Cook at GA was outstanding, earning her player of the match and she netted 91% 10/11 goals during her time on in this position.  Adams continued to worked tirelessly throughout making a positive contribution and making some great decisions.  Combined with the back unit who also worked relentlessly and gained 6 turnovers/ rebounds during this final 15, Hucclecote upped the pace to ensure victory would remain in their hands.  Great umpiring by both umpires contributed to a physically challenging yet exciting game, and the end result of 43 – 36 was a tribute to the whole squad who proved their strength and depth again in today’s fixture.
