A depleted Lightning squad of 8 encountered a very strong Chelts Hot Shots in the first game of the season. With a number of players stepping up from Div 2 for the first time, this was always going to be a tough baptism!
From the outset, Lizza Mitchell at GK, making her debut in Div 1, disrupted the Chelts shooting circle, taking numerous interceptions. Unfortunately, Lightning were unable to convert these turnovers to goal & were 8 goals down after the first 15 mins.
The 2nd quarter was Lightnings best only losing it 8-9. Iona Wong, another player at Div 1 for the first time, began to play more confidently, netting 6 out of 7 attempts.
Strong court play by all the mid players, Newcomer Jess New, Capt. Sarah Amey, Sarah Mitchell & Holly Walker matched Chelts moving the ball through court. It was just in the finish where we struggled.
Eleri Sewell had to leave the court with a knee injury, closely followed by GA Hannah Evans, which had a huge impact on the game. With the bare seven on court, which included Sewell having to come back on, Chelts began to take control & stretch their lead.
It was a great effort from all 8 players, who never gave up, but on this occaision, Chelts had more depth in their squad & ran out worthy winners 38 goals to 16.
Player of the match - Lizza Mitchell for her tireless defending & making 14 turnovers in the game.
