Hucclecote B had to dig deep to hang on & secure their first win in Regional 1. They started confidently, with shooters, Max Powell & Hannah Faulkner netting 11 of their 17 shots. At the other end, the circle defence of Nicole Goddard & Sarah Boner, put the Bath shooters under pressure, restricting their opportunities to just 11 attempts.
Mid court Helen Werrell, Emma McKensie & Lucy Smith, moved the ball through court at speed with
Hucclecote finishing the first quarter with a slim advantage 11-8.
During the next 15 mins, although errors crept into the mid court, Hucclecote pulled away to lead by 8 goals,11-13.
In the heat of the dome, changes were made at half time to bring a fresh impetus to the court. Fliss Phillips replaced Lucy Smith @ WD, with Smith moving into the middle. Emma McKensie moved to the WA, replacing Helen Werrell, Sophie Garton came on at GS & Lucy Werrell into the circle defence.
It took a few minutes for the new shooting partnership to gel, but Garton netted 4/5 of her shots, even though the new Bath keeper did not allow her to dominate the circle.
Changes in the Bath shooting circle had an immediate impact, with the new GA converting 7 of her 8 attempts. Even with Hucclecote's improved error rate, Bath clawed their way back into the game, cancelling out Hucclecote's 8 goal advantage.
Going into the last quarter with a slim 1 goal advantage, Hucclecote knew they had to hold their own ball to secure their first win. Sarah Boner moved to GD to pressurise the Bath GA, a job she did well, restricting her to only 3 attempts at goal. The final few minutes were nail biting for the spectators, with either team capable of snatching a win. However, Hucclecote held their nerve, keeping possession in the final 2 minutes, to finish with a thoroughly deserved victory, 36 goals to 34!
It was a fantastic squad effort, to hold onto their lead & secure their first win in Regional 1.
