Hucclecote A vs. Plymouth Pilgrims

After a two week break from fixtures Hucclecote were unphased and took an early lead, but true to Pilgrims reputation they were not going to allow Hucclecote an easy ride and most of the quarter went goal for goal.  Hucclecote had opportunities to pull ahead significantly however let a few errors creep in meaning the lead was just 11-9 at the first break.

With a McKenzie introduced at WA this saw an injection of pace and some slick attacking set ups meaning Hucclecote pulled further ahead.  Hucclecote took control quarter and had Pilgrims rattled, leading 24-19 at half time.

Making her debut at this level Donoghue took the WD bib and Pilgrims also made a number of changes.  Pilgrims changes seemed to have the desired effect as they scored three on the trot without contest.   Once Hucclecote settled and found Banyard in the circle she converted at 100%.  Richards at GK made two clean turnovers amongst a number of tips.  Hucclecote dug deep and held onto their lead however Pilgrims had reduced this to just three, 33-30.

With Pratten back on at WA in the final quarter the score line went goal for goal.  An unfortunate umpiring decision saw Dowle’s converted “swoosh” reset due to interference from the opposition, but sadly was unable to replicate, which proved a turning point for Pilgrims who clawed their way back in with some quality shooting of their own and with minutes to go the score was level.  The pressure was on and neither team appeared to be able to break the other, with both teams converting off their centre passes.  A penalty pass or shot on the whistle saw Pilgrims take the win, their only time to lead the whole game 42-41.  A gutted Hucclecote team left the court, but are determined to finish the season on a high and win their few remaining games.

Thanks Flo Edwards who stepped in as Primary Carer, Michaela Ifill as Team Manager, and to Emma McKenzie and Tonia Donoghue who stepped up to strengthen the squad.  And of course to Liz as always!

Player of the match went to Emma McKenzie.
