Hucclecote Prem Vrs Oaksway

26th February 2012

Loss 39 – 48

Hucclecote travelled the five hour trip to Oaksway with a small squad with injuries and unavailability a factor again this week. The squad were as follows: Liv Beveridge (GS), Gemma Gray (GA), Neala Brennan (WA), Jack Gabriel (C), Lauren Brooks (WD), Sam Cook (GD), Sam Perry (GK) and Lydia Hallbrook.

The game started at a fast pace and the Oaksway team came out all guns blazing. Hucclecote started poorly and took time to adjust to the very physical way the game was played and the manner in which the Umpires interpreted the rules. Before Hucclecote had even scored a goal they were 6-0 down.  Oaksway were finding their tall shooter with ease and Hucclecote called two injury time outs in the first quarter. This led to Brennan coming off injured and Hallbrook coming on as GS after the team was re-organized. Oaksway continued in the same form and finished the first quarter leading 19-6.

The second quarter saw Hucclecote looking to start competing with a determined Oaksway team. Gray was now at WA, with Beverridge and Hallbrook in the shooting circle. The team started to fight back, adapting to the physical nature of the game. Brooks took a number of intercepts linking in with Gabriel who controlled the game through the mid court. The shooters were now being found and Hallbrook scored seven in the quarter which saw Oaksway win the quarter 10-8 leading the game at half time 29-14. Hucclecote would have made more inroads into the Oaksway lead had it not been for a series of poor passes.

The third quarter saw Brennan back on court as C with Cook taking the WD bib. Perry and Gabriel went in as GK and GD respectively; Beveridge went to WA and Gray to GA. This saw Hucclecote push really hard in the game, Cook played impressively at WD taking a number of clean intercepts. Brennan played with great composure through the middle and controlled the game feeding Beveridge at WA consistently. What was a real positive for the team was the way that Gray and Hallbrook played, both finding space in the circle and shooting well, both scoring 6 goals each.  The team defended throughout the court and saw Brennan at one point leap into the air taking a clean intercept much to the delight of two on the bench. Hucclecote restricted Oaksway to scoring 3 goals, winning the quarter 12-3 but still having a lot of work to do as Oaksway still led the game 39-26.

The fourth quarter saw the same Hucclecote line up, with Oaksway looking to re-impose themselves in the game. The physical nature of the game continued and Hucclecote still had their work cut out to get the ball through court. Composure and discipline in the quarter saw Hucclecote make only two poor passes and Brennan and Beveridge controlled the ball through to the shooters. Hallbrook shot well netting 10/13 attempts. Perry felt the physical nature of the game once more and had to come off court injured, Brooks replaced Cook at WD and played with great composure for her age. Cook went back into GK. The Oaksway shooter continued to shoot with accuracy netting 7 goals at 100% accuracy. Hucclecote still came out of the quarter with great credit winning the last quarter 13-9. This didn’t prevent Oaksway winning the game 48-39.

Hucclecote played 3 good quarters (winning the last 3 quarters 33-29); however games are played over 4 quarters and the team need to play through the physical element of the game and through all 4 quarters. A disappointing day with some positive elements, Hucclecote continue to push and need to continue striving for the wins.

Thanks must be given to Perry, who was not fit to play in this fixture but played through pain and injury for as long as she could.

Coaches’ player of the game was Brennan who controlled the ball brilliantly through the mid and attacking thirds.
