The U14 team travelled to Bath University Sports Training Village to compete in the Regional North Tournament. A top 4 finish was required to progress through to the next round. Our first match against Convent from Jersey was close but the girls overcame their obvious nerves and we ran out 13-7 winners. The next game was against Poole. They were well drilled, skilful, experienced and fast. Despite a valiant effort we lost 8-18 and forecast that this would be the team to beat in the tournament. Our most exciting game was against Lawn. We got off to a poor start, making some basic errors and the game looked lost but some brilliantly accurate shooting from Laura Jones (10/12) and some crucial interceptions mid court from Jess Longley and Lydia Burgess gave us a chance. With a minute to go we pulled it back to 13-13 only to see the game slip to a 13-15 defeat.

After a confident win over Almondsbury 15-8 we were disappointed to finish 3rd in our group. This gave us a tough quarter final against Bournemouth, the runners up from the other group. This was the most important game of the day as to get to the semi final ensured us a place in the top 4. Having watched Bournemouth play we knew they were beatable. Credit goes to our defence in this game Emma Neild, Alix Matthews, Kim Locklin and Becky Brunt who tirelessly intercepted and started attacks in this game in which our shooters were all nervous and missing uncharacteristically. Bournemouth had 7 shots and converted them all, Hucclecote had 18 shots and managed to convert 9. A great win which secured our place and took us into the semi final. Unfortunately the draw meant that we faced Poole again in the semi final. We were proud to keep their score down to 15 this time and we still scored 8 so although we lost we felt we had improved! The 3rd/4th place play off was against Accies from Jersey, a team who earlier in the day had looked like making the final. 14 tired girls took to the court but the Hucclecote shooters were outstanding. Maisie 5/6, Hannah 7/7 and Laura 8/9. It was a confident, skilful display resulting in a 20-13 victory.

The semi finalists were all presented to Jo Binns (TeamBath and England) at the end of a tiring but excellent day. The girls were polite, hard working and supported each other all day. My thanks to the parents who travelled with us and gave us excellent support. Thanks also to Judith Matthews who was an efficient Team Manager, Sharon Locklin who scored all day and to Charlotte Olley, our umpire.

The next round is on 25th April at Bath University
