Hucclecote U14 Regional Finals
Hucclecote U14 A team made it through to the Regional finals down at Plymouth Life centre on 22nd April. We all travelled down on the Saturday evening and stayed at a hotel which we booked independently and thanks to parents for coming, paying, staying and supporting.
The girls had worked hard to get to the regionals and we welcomed Grace Redmond back into the team this weekend after her missing the first regional rounds. The girls were focused and looked the part on the day.
Their first game was against Cornwall Saints, we had no idea what the team were like however we should have left the court with a win but unfortunately we weren’t quite a wake in this game and just missed out on a win. But the girls didn’t let this stop them and they went out into the next game against local rivals Lawn and came off the court with a win. The next game was against Exeter and this was a close encounter but the girls dug deep and won the game. Our final game before lunch was against Poole, we knew they were strong after meeting them in the previous rounds however at half time we only trailed by 2 but unfortunately the second half Poole dominated and we lost our flow & the match. After lunch and another two breaks we had Team Jets (Jersey), and again we knew from previous experience they were strong but they went out and battled hard however just couldn’t breakdown their skill & lost. We then took to the court against Plymstock and we were down at time however with a bit of a talking to and determination from the girls they pulled it out of the bag and came off court heads held high and with win. We looked at the results table and seen that we could come third if we won our final game. It was a tiring day for the girls and just one last game against Penryn, the girls took to the court and played the best they had and came off with a fantastic win. They played the ball first time and they worked hard until the final whistle. They had done it, we finished 3rd and Liz I were very proud coaches.
I’d like to thank all the parents for their support on this day also to Alison for keeping score on the bench as team manager, to Lorraine McNickle who came as our umpire and supported us, to Annabel who came as our scorer as couldn’t play for us as she is currently second claim to our club and to Liz Banyard for helping me with selections, advice and for supporting me as a coach.
Player of the day: Evie O’Connor, Evie is a year young and you wouldn’t have guessed, her timing driving out the circle was fantastic and spot on every time, the defence were bigger than her didn’t faze her and she handled herself brilliantly. She shot well and stood out on the day
Team: Evie O’Connor, Heather Longbotham, Imy Anderson, Rhiannon Lowery, Grace Redmond, Ellen Thrall, Catherine Tambling (C), Emily Lane, Catherine Taylor (C) and Kaylee Brooker.
