Hucclecote U.14 Netball Squad Fall at Final Hurdle
Hucclecote U.14 Netball Squad’s fantastic season came to a halt when they fell at the final hurdle in their quest to reach the National Final Championships.
The South West Regional Finals in Bath certainly pushed the girls all the way with 7 matches on the day, each of 14 minutes duration. Hucclecote were slow off the blocks which was unusual for this squad and during their first fixture against Exeter led by just 2-1 at half time even though Beth Adkins had a stunning game turning over many interceptions. The second half however saw them go up a gear with Lucy Martin suddenly on fire scoring 6/6 attempts, Hucclecote went on to win 10 – 3 giving them their first 5 points of the day.
Hucclecote’s chance to target a place in the finals was still on track and the first half against Carn Brea Storm started positively as they led 7-2 at half time although they only narrowly won 9-6 as Storm hit back hard in the 2nd half. It was the next two fixtures that saw their hopes fade as Lawn from Swindon and West Exeter turned up the heat and put pressure on the Hucclecote young guns. This resulted in ‘Cote’ losing out by just 1 goal in each game, even though they worked tirelessly. Sadly these losses meant that their dream of a National Finals placing was over.
The remaining games saw a loss against Cornwall Saints by 11 – 8, but a great effort produced by all in the last game against Team Jets, saw the girls finish on a positive winning the fixture narrowly 11-10. Poole was another loss earlier on in the day, however they stormed it against every team and deserved to take the Regional Finals title and a place at the National Finals along with Lawn.
The squad however should hold their heads high as they have had an amazing season, winning Gloucestershire’s Junior U.14 League, taking Runners Up in the Jersey Tournament, and making Regional Finals.
Coach Gilly Salter would like to thank the parents, carers and supporters who have been on their side all season, and to the management team of helpers /volunteers.
