- Week 7 round up
Super Saturday 3 wins from Super Saturday 3 wins from 3!Saturday kicked off with Hurricanes v BC Knights. With only the bare 7 players there was little margin for error.Hurricanes stormed into a 10 goal lead with shooters Eve (10/12) & Michelle ( 7/8) both in sparkling form. This continued in the 2nd half with some super feeds from Emma Edmunds at C.At the back, Mouse & Laura combined well making numerous tips & interceptions. Halle Meddick in her debut for the club, certainly didn`t lack confidence for one so young! At WA in the 2nd half she took control of the attack, dictating space & feeds. She was awarded player of the match by both opposition & coaches. Anna Stephens at C 2nd half linked well through court, demonstrating how versatile she is. It was a solid performance which was reflected in the final result of 57-31. 2nd game of the day was Storm in Div1 v Cheltenham United who had had a good run of form lately. Storm also down to bare 7 had to be at their best to take the win. They started well, taking the first 3 goals before united scored. At the first interval they held a lead of 6 goals. U16 Nadine Baird was on form netting 16/20 in the first half. It was great to have the old partnership of Eve & Caitlin back together in defence & between them they kept United`s shooters at bay. During the 2nd half, United rallied and scores were fairly even with the winning margin being 6, which was the lead at half time. It was a really hard fought, competitive game which Storm throughly deserved to win. 40-34 final result. Player of the match by coaches & opposition was given to Nadine Baird. The final match of the day was Lightning v Glos Ladies. A depleted Lightning gave opportunity for Elle Gabriel again & Katya Jennings for the first time to step up from Div1. After a nervous start Katya began to slot the goals away with some super interplay with Ella Flatman, out of position at GA. The attacking trio Jenny Nina & Ella played patiently to work the ball into the circle to good effect. At half time, Lightning trailed by 5 but with the defence duo Ellie & Abi stepping up a gear, in the 3rd Q, Glos shooters began to play with less confidence, only converting 6/9. With the welcome return of Beth Atkins back from her travels, it gave the flexibility of giving Meg a breather @ WD. At the end of the 3rd q, Lightning had edged into a 3 goal lead much to the oppositions dismay. With a strong final 15 mins, playing patiently, Lightning increased their lead, netting 10 goals to Glos`s 6. It was a fabulous squad performance, winning 41-34 but joint player of the match went to shooters Katya Jennings ( 30/37) in her debut & Ella Flatman ( 11/15) All in all - a very satisfying day! Well done all!
