Nine teams contested the inaugural Charity Mixed Netball Tournament on Sunday 13th July 2008, organised by Sue Wainwright and Becky Hemming from Hucclecote Netball Club and held at Bentham Country Club, in aid of Cancer Research.
In glorious summer weather and with each team fielding up to three men in their teams, matches were keenly contested. While the women clearly led the way in the skills of the game, the men largely played to the rules and spirit of the game, and on occasion showed ingenuity and some real potential; much like an English Summer! The umpires kept a watchful eye on proceedings, only needing to resort to the odd stern word and reminder of the rules (surely it is only a house that could be up for "repossession"?!) and who was in charge. The short game format of seven minutes each way suited the hot, sunny conditions and variety of fitness levels on display. Squad rotation, where possible, certainly was a factor for the later matches.
And so to the results: In ninth place, and rewarded for their efforts in almost sealing a victory were "3 Men & The Babes". Mid table respectability was shared among "Brian's Babes (BB), "Moody Blues", "The Vikings", "Odd Bods and Boys" and "The Red Saints". Third place went to "Mixed Nuts" and runners up spot went to "The Gladiators". The winners, and undefeated throughout the tournament were "Hucclecote Tick Tick Boom!" referred to as "The Simmonds" team on the day.
Commenting on the tournament, Sue Wainwright reflected on all the positive feedback from those who took part and watched as the drama unfolded. Becky Hemming also felt that there was a lot of fun had by everyone and that the men who took part will have a new found respect for women netballers! This may become an annual event - watch this space and for the men out there, training and reading up on rules start now.......
