17 November 2008 - Hucclecote U14 versus TeamBath Tigers U14
Success for Hucclecote against TeamBath boosts confidence.

Sunday 16th November

A squad of 11 U14 players travelled to Bradley Stokes Community High School, Bristol to take on TeamBath U14 team. Liz Bloor from Bath had suggested a friendly fixture as her team were winning the local league and needed tougher opposition.

Luckily Maisie Simmonds at 5’10” was there first and the Bath team looked at her with fear and anticipation as they arrived!

The M5 was completely closed southbound so with 2 minutes to go before the start Hucclecote only had 7 players (4 defenders!) but took to the court nervous of TeamBath’s reputation. The shooters were nervous and had lots of possession but did not convert these opportunities. Despite some close play the 1st session was lost 3-5.

By now everyone had arrived and the starting 7 could be whipped up. Hucclecote’s superior organisation on court allowed them to win the session easily 7-2 taking the score to 10-7. The 3 shooters settled and began to convert goals in a 3rd session in which the defence intercepted Bath’s passes into their circle. The 3rd session was won 7-3 leaving the half time score17-10.

The squad of 11 players was changed each session but the players adapted well and were aware of set plays on court. Inevitably frequent changes meant that Bath could make the most of the first few minutes of the next 2 sessions and they put their strongest 2 players into the defence to stop the Hucclecote shooters. Hucclecote lost both of the next 2 sessions 4-6 and Bath’s determination  brought the score to 25-20 with 1 to go. Hucclecote’s final 7 players had no intention of relinquishing their lead and in fact extended it to reach a final score of 31-22.

All the girls played extremely well and showed a real maturity in their play, especially when they were under pressure. Many thanks to Charlotte who travelled to umpire for us and to the parents who endured a very difficult drive to get there and were vocal in their support!
